AI Assistant, Local & On-Device — NanoChat

Description

Free local on-device AI assistant in your Chrome sidebar: chat with any page, summarize, rewrite, translate and automate tasks. A free, local, on-device AI assistant for Chrome. The model runs inside your browser, so your prompts, page content and conversations never leave your computer — no API key, no account, no subscription, no external AI service. NanoChat opens in the Chrome side panel next to the page you are reading. Ask questions about the current page, summarize an article, explain a passage, rewrite selected text or work from the page context without copying it into a separate chat. It runs on Chrome's built-in Prompt API and Gemini Nano. Why on-device AI: - Your prompts, page context and conversations are never sent to an external AI service - Works without sign-in, account or API key - Chats are stored locally in the extension - No per-message cost and no cloud usage quota - Safe to use on pages with internal or sensitive content What you can do: - Chat with the current webpage or document in a dedicated AI side panel - Summarize articles, explain complex passages, translate selections, rewrite copy and check spelling from the context menu - Attach images and screenshots for multimodal prompts on supported devices - Let the experimental browser agent propose and perform page actions such as clicking, typing, scrolling and navigation — every action stays visible and under your control - Keep a searchable local history of your conversations - Open the AI assistant instantly with a keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+Shift+Y, or Command+Shift+Y on macOS) Who it is for: - Students and researchers who want to understand and summarize web content faster - Writers and professionals who need an AI assistant next to the page they are working on - Privacy-conscious users who want local AI instead of cloud-based chat tools - Developers exploring Chrome's built-in on-device AI Requirements: - A desktop version of Google Chrome that supports the built-in Prompt API and Gemini Nano - A device that meets Chrome's on-device AI requirements: currently at least 22 GB of free disk space for the model and sufficient CPU or GPU resources - The built-in AI model must be available or downloaded in Chrome before first use NanoChat is free and open source: https://github.com/cupcakedev/nanochat-extension
