Word Count Tools — word counter, character counter & text statistics in one click. 100% private and offline. Word Count Tools is a lightweight, privacy-first Chrome extension that instantly counts words, characters, and provides full text statistics for any selected text — right on the page you're reading. No copy‑paste, no external servers, no tracking. Just select any text, click the icon (or press Alt+W), and get accurate word counts, character counts (with and without spaces), estimated reading time, speaking time, and — when you enable Advanced Stats — a deeper analysis of your text. Whether you're a writer, editor, student, SEO specialist, developer, or anyone who works with text, Word Count Tools helps you stay in flow without ever leaving your page. Why Word Count Tools? Most online word counters force you to copy text, open a new tab, paste it into a website, and hope your data isn't stored or sold. Other extensions hide essential stats behind right‑click menus, lack support for Asian languages, or demand intrusive permissions. Word Count Tools is different: ✅ 100% private & offline — your text never leaves your device. ✅ No ads, no sign‑up, no data collection. ✅ Instant stats — one click (or keyboard shortcut) and you see everything. ✅ Works on any webpage — articles, Google Docs, emails, social media, PDFs opened in Chrome. ✅ Perfect for sensitive content — everything is processed locally. What You Get (Basic Stats) As soon as you select text and open the popup, you'll see: Words — accurate word count for Latin, Cyrillic, and other space‑separated scripts. CJK Characters — automatically switches to CJK character count when Chinese, Japanese, or Korean text is detected. Characters (with spaces) Characters (no spaces) Reading time — calculated at 275 words per minute (industry standard). Speaking time — calculated at 180 words per minute (average speech rate). Times are displayed in exact seconds (e.g., "35 sec") or minutes with seconds (e.g., "1 min 20 sec"), not rounded estimates. Advanced Stats (Toggle On) Enable the Advanced Stats toggle to unlock deeper insights into your text — all computed locally, without any external service: Sentences — accurately counts sentences, including those ending with . ! ? … Paragraphs — counts text blocks separated by line breaks. Average word length — helps assess vocabulary complexity. Average sentence length — a key readability metric. Longest sentence and Shortest sentence — spot unusually long or short structures. Unique words — measures lexical diversity, useful for SEO and copywriting. Unique CJK Support Most word counters fail on Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (CJK) text. Word Count Tools uses a smart detection algorithm that automatically replaces "Words" with "CJK Characters" when CJK scripts are detected. For mixed‑language texts (e.g., English + Japanese), you get both the word count for the Latin/Cyrillic part and the CJK character count for the Asian part — clearly separated, no confusion. Advanced Stats for CJK texts show unique CJK characters, helping linguists, translators, and language learners. Privacy by Design We believe you should never have to wonder where your text goes. Word Count Tools: 🔒 Never sends your text anywhere — everything stays on your device. 🔒 Does not use cookies, analytics, or tracking. 🔒 Only requests two permissions: activeTab (to read selected text when you click the icon) and scripting (to count words locally). No access to your browsing history, no background scripts that run without your action. 🔒 The extension works completely offline — no internet connection required after installation. 🔒 An open Privacy Policy (linked from the popup) clearly explains all of this in plain English. Perfect for Writers & Editors — quickly check word count against editorial guidelines, measure reading time, and analyze sentence structure without leaving your draft. Students — hit assignment word limits and improve academic writing with advanced stats. SEO Specialists & Marketers — instantly count characters for meta tags, title tags, ad copy, and social media posts; check keyword density with unique word counts. Developers & Technical Writers — verify string lengths for UI, logs, and documentation without copy‑pasting into separate tools. Translators & Linguists — benefit from correct CJK handling and unique character counts. More Features Dark mode — automatically follows your system theme, easy on the eyes day and night. Keyboard shortcut — press Alt+W to open the popup instantly without touching the mouse. Share Extension — a subtle bar at the bottom copies the extension link, so you can share it with colleagues or friends. Uninstall feedback — if you decide to uninstall, you'll be taken to a brief anonymous survey; your feedback helps us improve. 11 languages — the interface is fully translated into English, Russian, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Japanese, Chinese (Simplified), Korean, Italian, and Latin American Spanish. The extension automatically adapts to your browser language. Technical Details Built with vanilla JavaScript (no frameworks) for maximum performance. Uses Chrome Manifest V3. Employs Intl.Segmenter API for accurate word segmentation, with a robust fallback for older browsers. All text processing happens in the popup; no background server, no external API calls.
