Description
Play voicemail attachments directly in Gmail, including telephony-encoded WAV files Gmail cannot open. Free, no downloads required. Your voicemail is sitting in Gmail. You just can't hear it. Your phone system sends voicemail to your inbox as a WAV attachment. You click it. Gmail shows a player. You press play. Nothing. Or static. Or an error. The file uses a telephony codec - G.726, ADPCM, or another format that Gmail's built-in player simply cannot decode. So you download the file. Open it in another app. Maybe it plays, maybe it doesn't. Either way, you just lost 30 seconds on something that should take one click. That's the problem WAV Player for Gmail solves. WHY GMAIL CAN'T PLAY YOUR VOICEMAIL Most business phone systems and VoIP providers encode voicemail using legacy telephony codecs. These formats were designed for phone networks, not web browsers: - G.726 ADPCM - used by Cisco, Avaya, and many PBX systems - ADPCM IMA - common in older voicemail systems - GSM 6.10 - standard mobile carrier voicemail format - AMR - used by Android carriers for voicemail delivery Gmail's audio player handles standard PCM and MP3 just fine. But when it encounters these telephony-specific encodings inside a WAV container, it fails silently or shows an error. If you receive voicemail by email, you've probably hit this wall. WHAT THIS EXTENSION DOES WAV Player for Gmail detects audio attachments in your inbox and adds an inline player that can decode telephony formats Gmail cannot handle. All decoding happens locally in your browser. No file uploads. No external servers. No account required. Here's what you get: Inline playback - press play directly inside Gmail, no downloads needed Full transport controls - scrub to any position, adjust volume, see elapsed time Variable speed playback - 0.5x, 0.75x, 1x, 1.25x, 1.5x, or 2x speed Broad format support - plays the telephony-encoded WAV files that Gmail cannot, along with your standard audio attachments Zero configuration - install and it works on your next voicemail HOW IT WORKS 1. Install WAV Player for Gmail 2. Open Gmail and find an email with a voicemail attachment 3. A player appears below the attachment 4. Press play That's it. No setup, no sign-in, no configuration. The player appears automatically whenever Gmail cannot handle an audio attachment natively. WHY LOCAL DECODING MATTERS Some audio tools upload your files to a server for processing. That means your voicemail content - which may contain sensitive medical, legal, or financial information - passes through a third party. WAV Player for Gmail uses FFmpeg WebAssembly to decode audio entirely inside your browser tab. The audio data never leaves your computer. There is no server. There is no account. There is nothing to trust except the code running locally. SUPPORTED FORMATS This extension handles the telephony audio formats your phone system is most likely to use. It decodes WAV files encoded with legacy codecs (G.726, ADPCM IMA, mu-law, A-law) that Gmail's built-in player cannot process, and it also plays the standard audio attachments you receive day to day. If your phone system emails voicemail as an attachment, this extension can almost certainly play it. REAL SCENARIOS WHERE THIS HELPS Medical receptionist: A patient leaves a voicemail after hours. Your phone system forwards it to the shared inbox as a WAV file. Gmail won't play it. With WAV Player, the morning staff can listen immediately without downloading anything or forwarding to a personal phone. Legal assistant: A client leaves a detailed voicemail about case deadlines. The file arrives as G.726 ADPCM. Instead of downloading and hunting for a compatible player, you press play and take notes directly in Gmail. Real estate agent: Between showings, you check email on your laptop. Three voicemails from leads, all WAV attachments. One click each - listen, respond, move on. No app switching. Small business owner: Your VoIP provider (RingCentral, Vonage, 8x8, Grasshopper) delivers voicemail to Gmail. Some play fine, some don't. WAV Player handles all of them consistently. IT administrator: Staff keep submitting tickets about voicemail attachments not playing. Instead of explaining codec compatibility to every user, you deploy one extension that solves it for everyone. Remote worker: You're on a Chromebook with limited app options. A voicemail arrives in an unsupported format. No desktop apps available. WAV Player decodes it right in the browser. WHAT THIS EXTENSION DOES NOT DO - Does not read your email content or metadata - Does not upload audio to any server - Does not require a Google account connection - Does not track usage or collect analytics - Does not modify your emails in any way The only permission it uses: - Host permission (mail.google.com) - needed to detect audio attachments and inject the player into Gmail's interface All audio processing happens locally using WebAssembly. No network requests are made except to fetch the attachment file itself (which Gmail already authorized). COMPLETELY FREE No trial limits. No premium tier. No account required. No ads.
