WA Voice to Text for WhatsApp™ Web - Private AI

Description

Transcribe WhatsApp voice messages to text with a local Whisper AI model. 100% private, free and unlimited. Someone sends you a two-minute voice message. You are in a meeting, on a train, or it is 2 AM and everyone is asleep. You cannot listen right now, and you cannot skim a voice note the way you skim text. If your work lives on WhatsApp, this happens all day. Suppliers, customers, and colleagues fire off voice messages because talking is faster for them. Reading is faster for you. That mismatch costs you time on every single one. There is a way to turn those voice notes into text you can read in seconds. WHY EXISTING VOICE-TO-TEXT TOOLS FALL SHORT Transcription is not new, but the tools built for it share the same problems: - They upload your audio to a server. Voice messages are personal, and business voice notes can contain prices, names, and private details you should not be sending to a third party. - They charge per minute or lock transcription behind a subscription. - They live in a separate app, so you export the audio, upload it, wait, and copy the result back. - WhatsApp's own transcription is limited to some regions, some languages, and some account types. Most people just replay the message three times and hope they caught it. This extension takes a different route: the speech model runs inside your own browser, and your audio never leaves your computer. WHAT THIS EXTENSION DOES WA Voice to Text adds a Transcribe button to voice messages in WhatsApp Web. Click it, and the spoken words appear as text right below the message, in a few seconds. The transcription runs on OpenAI's open-source Whisper model (the base multilingual version), executed locally in your browser through WebAssembly. No account, no API key, no server, no per-minute fee. Here is what you get: Transcribe button on voice messages - a small button on every voice note. One click turns speech into readable text in place. On-device Whisper model - the same speech recognition technology used across the industry, running on your own machine instead of a cloud server. Many languages - Whisper understands dozens of languages. Pick the language spoken in the voice note and the transcript comes out in that language. Reads what is on screen - the transcript appears directly under the voice message so you keep the full context of the conversation. Silent capture - the extension grabs the audio without blasting it out loud, so you can transcribe in a quiet room or a meeting. HOW IT WORKS 1. Install the extension and click its icon 2. Click Download to fetch the Whisper model - a one-time download with a progress bar 3. Open web.whatsapp.com and open a chat with voice messages 4. Hover a voice message and click Transcribe 5. Read the text that appears below it After the one-time model download, every transcription runs locally with no further network requests. WHY ON-DEVICE MATTERS FOR VOICE Audio is some of the most personal data you have. A voice message carries a real person's voice, their words, and often sensitive information. Sending that to a cloud transcription service means trusting someone else with all of it. Running Whisper locally changes the equation: - Private: the audio is decoded and transcribed inside your browser and never uploaded - Free: no server means no per-minute billing and no subscription - Unlimited: transcribe one voice note or a hundred a day, there is no quota - Yours: the model runs on your hardware, offline after the first download ABOUT THE MODEL DOWNLOAD On first use the extension downloads the open-source Whisper model from the HuggingFace model hub, with an automatic mirror fallback for regions where HuggingFace is unreachable. This is a one-time data download, cached by your browser. The speech-recognition runtime itself is bundled inside the extension. REAL SCENARIOS WHERE THIS HELPS Cross-border trade: A supplier sends a long voice note about an order in their language. You read the transcript in seconds instead of replaying it and straining to catch every number. Busy support desk: Customers send voice messages all day. Transcribing them lets your team scan and prioritize instead of listening to each one in real time. Quiet places: You are in a meeting or a library and cannot play audio. Transcribe silently and read the message without headphones. Accessibility: For anyone hard of hearing, voice messages become readable text, making WhatsApp conversations fully accessible. Keeping a record: Turn important voice notes into text you can copy, search, and save alongside the rest of the chat. WHAT THIS EXTENSION DOES NOT DO - It does not upload, collect, store, or transmit your audio or your conversations anywhere. Transcription happens inside your browser. - It does not send messages or post the transcript for you. The text is shown for you to read and copy. - It does not extract contacts, export chats, or scrape any data. - It does not hook into WhatsApp's internal code beyond reading the voice message you choose to transcribe. The only permissions it uses: - storage - saves your language choice and the button on/off setting - access to web.whatsapp.com - shows the Transcribe button and reads the voice message you click Network access is used only for the one-time model download. There is no analytics and no tracking. FREE AND UNLIMITED The extension is free with no limits on how much you transcribe. Because the model runs on your own hardware, there is no per-minute cost behind it. REQUIREMENTS A desktop browser with WebAssembly support (Chrome 116 or newer) and roughly 200 MB of free disk space for the model cache. Works on Windows, Mac, and Linux. No browser flags or special settings needed. WHO THIS IS FOR - Sellers and buyers who get voice messages from partners across languages - Support teams handling large volumes of voice notes - Anyone who prefers reading over listening, or cannot play audio right now - People who are hard of hearing - Anyone who wants voice messages as searchable, copyable text GETTING STARTED Install, download the model once, open WhatsApp Web, and click Transcribe on any voice message. Your first transcript is seconds away. No account needed. No sign-up. No credit card. Just readable voice messages. --- WhatsApp is a trademark of Meta Platforms, Inc.
