Save data while multitasking — drops to 144p while a YouTube tab is hidden, restores your quality when you're back. 🎬 You're not actually watching that video. Let's be honest. You clicked play, then switched to check Slack, answer an email, or doomscroll for "just a second." Meanwhile, YouTube is still happily streaming 1080p to a tab nobody's looking at — quietly eating your data plan like it's an all-you-can-eat buffet. Smart Data Saver for YouTube catches it in the act. 🌍 Our motto: small savings, multiplied, matter. One dropped stream saves a few megabytes. That's not going to save the planet on its own — but multiply it by every tab left open, every video forgotten in the background, across every person who runs this — and it adds up to real bandwidth given back, real infrastructure load avoided, and a little less strain on the pipes the next generation will also be streaming through. We're not claiming to single-handedly save "billions of petabytes" today — but that's the direction we're pointed in, one quietly dropped-to-144p tab at a time. Think of it as composting for your Wi-Fi. The moment you tab away, it waits a bit (so it doesn't overreact to a quick tab-flip), then quietly drops the video down to 144p — enough to keep the audio and progress going without burning through your bandwidth on pixels nobody's watching. The second you come back, it restores your original quality automatically. No clicking, no settings menu, no remembering to do it yourself. 🍿 Why you'll actually like this one: ⏱️ Fully automatic — drops and restores quality based on tab visibility, with adjustable delays so it fits how you multitask 📊 See your savings — a running total of estimated MB saved, right in the popup 🎛️ Your rules 🔒 Zero data collection — nothing is tracked, logged, or sent anywhere. Ever. (See the full privacy policy below.) ⚙️ How it works (the honest version) YouTube doesn't offer an official way for extensions to change video quality — that API was quietly retired — so this extension drives YouTube's own Settings → Quality menu the same way your mouse would. It's a little more old-school than an API call, but it works, and it's fully visible in the source if you want to see exactly what it's clicking. 🔐 Privacy, in one sentence This extension makes zero network requests. Your settings and savings total live only in your own synced Chrome storage — nobody, including us, ever sees them. 📌 One honest disclaimer Smart Data Saver for YouTube is an independent, unofficial project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by YouTube or Google. "YouTube" is a trademark of Google LLC. If your data plan could talk, it would thank you. Probably in 144p. Multiply that "thank you" by a few million tabs, and that's the whole idea.
