Per-domain notes, clipboard history, and quick data — all in a sleek sidebar. ClipNote — Smart Clipboard & Web Notes Your all-in-one sidebar companion for capturing, organizing, and protecting information as you browse. ClipNote lives in Chrome's side panel, giving you instant access to per-site notes, automatic clipboard history, quick-access data snippets, a global task list, and encrypted notebooks — all without leaving the page you're on. WHY CLIPNOTE? Every day you copy text, jot down quick thoughts, and juggle information across dozens of tabs. But where does it all go? ClipNote solves this by giving every website its own dedicated workspace right inside your browser. Notes you write on GitHub stay on GitHub. Clipboard items you copy on Stack Overflow stay linked to Stack Overflow. And when you need something that follows you everywhere — global notebooks, tasks, and quick data snippets are always one click away. CORE FEATURES Per-Domain Notes ClipNote automatically associates your notes with the website you're currently viewing. Switch tabs and your notes switch with you. Each domain gets its own set of notebooks, so your research notes for one project never mix with another. - Create multiple notebooks per website to keep topics organized - Rich text editing with bold, highlights, bullet lists, numbered lists, checkboxes, and horizontal dividers - Customizable highlight colors — choose from seven colors to mark up your notes exactly how you want - Font size controls to adjust text size up or down within your notes - Undo and redo support with dedicated toolbar buttons and keyboard shortcuts (Ctrl+Z / Ctrl+Y) - Autosave with a 700ms debounce — your notes are saved automatically as you type, with a visual confirmation indicator - Byte counter showing real-time notebook size against the 100 KB per-notebook limit - Plain-text paste — all pasted content is automatically stripped of HTML formatting for clean, consistent notes - Copy All button to quickly copy the entire note content to your clipboard Global Notebooks Need notes that aren't tied to any specific website? Global notebooks are available on every page you visit. Use them for personal reference material, project plans, meeting notes, or anything that doesn't belong to a single domain. - Same full-featured editor as per-domain notes - Multiple notebooks with create, rename, and delete support - Independent from domain-specific content — always accessible regardless of which site you're on Automatic Clipboard History ClipNote silently captures everything you copy on any webpage. No manual action required — just copy text as you normally would, and ClipNote records it. - Captures standard copy events (Ctrl+C, right-click Copy, keyboard shortcuts) - Intercepts programmatic clipboard writes — when sites use "Copy" buttons that call navigator.clipboard.writeText() directly (like GitHub and Stack Overflow code blocks), ClipNote captures those too - Up to 50 items stored per domain with automatic deduplication — if you copy the same text twice, it won't create a duplicate entry - Each item shows relative timestamps ("2 min ago", "yesterday") and can be re-copied with one click - Delete individual items or clear the entire history for a domain - Items are stored per-domain, so your clipboard history for each site stays separate and organized Quick Data A global key-value store for the snippets you use constantly. Store your email addresses, account numbers, API keys, shipping addresses, phone numbers, or any frequently-needed text for instant one-click access. - Add labeled entries with values up to 2,000 characters - Copy any value to your clipboard with a single click - Edit or delete entries at any time - Duplicate label detection prevents accidental overwrites - Available on every website — not tied to a specific domain Tasks A built-in global task list inspired by Microsoft To Do. Manage your to-do items right alongside your notes and clipboard without switching to a separate app. - Add tasks by typing and pressing Enter or clicking Add - Mark tasks as complete with a satisfying circular checkbox - Filter between Active, Done, or All tasks using the segmented control - Each task shows when it was created with a relative timestamp - Delete individual tasks with the hover-reveal delete button - Clear all completed tasks at once with the "Clear done" button - Task count summary showing progress (e.g., "3/7 done") - Tasks persist across all websites and sync with cloud storage SAFE MODE — ENCRYPTED NOTEBOOKS Protect sensitive information with military-grade encryption. Any notebook — whether per-domain or global — can be locked with a password. - AES-256-GCM encryption using the Web Crypto API - PBKDF2 key derivation with 600,000 iterations for strong password protection - Your password is never stored anywhere — it's used to derive an encryption key and then discarded - Random salt and initialization vector generated for each encryption operation - Locked notebooks display a secure overlay — the encrypted content cannot be viewed or edited without the correct password - Visual lock indicator in the notebook dropdown so you always know which notebooks are protected - Lock and unlock from the toolbar with a dedicated padlock button - Password confirmation required when locking to prevent typos - Works on both per-domain and global notebooks SEARCH ACROSS EVERYTHING Quickly find anything you've saved in ClipNote with the unified search feature. Search across all your notes, clipboard history, and quick data entries simultaneously. - Searches across all stored domains — not just the current site - Results grouped by category: Notes, Clipboard, and Quick Data - Keyword highlighting in search results so you can quickly spot matches - Click a note result to navigate to it; click a clipboard or quick data result to copy its value - Debounced search input for smooth, responsive results as you type EXPORT AND BACKUP Never lose your data. ClipNote provides multiple export formats to back up or share your information. - JSON export — complete data backup that can be re-imported later - Text export — human-readable plain-text format of all your notes, clipboard items, and quick data - HTML export — beautifully formatted web page with all your content, ready to open in any browser or print - Full import from JSON backup — restore all data from a previous export - Export accessible from both the header dropdown and the Settings panel CLOUD SYNC Keep your data synchronized across multiple computers with cloud sync support. Chrome Sync Zero-setup synchronization using your Chrome Google account. Enable it with a single click in Settings and your data automatically stays in sync across every Chrome installation where you're signed in. No registration, no API keys, no configuration required. Google Drive Sync For larger datasets, connect your Google Drive account for seamless cloud backup and sync. ClipNote uses Chrome's built-in identity system, so authentication is handled natively — just click Connect and approve access. Your data is stored as a single JSON file in your Google Drive. Additional Providers Dropbox and OneDrive sync support is also available for users who prefer those platforms. Each provider stores a single clipnote-sync.json file in your cloud storage. Sync includes all your data: per-domain notes, clipboard history, quick data, global notebooks, and tasks. Conflict detection alerts you when cloud and local data diverge, letting you choose which version to keep. CONTEXT MENU INTEGRATION Right-click any selected text on a webpage and choose "Save to ClipNote" to instantly append it to your active notebook for that domain. The text is saved with a timestamp, and the toolbar icon briefly flashes to confirm the save. No need to open the sidebar — just select, right-click, and save. SMART TOOLBAR ICON The ClipNote toolbar icon is context-aware. It changes appearance based on whether you have notes saved for the current website: - Empty state icon when visiting a site with no saved notes - Active state icon (highlighted) when the current site has notebook content - Brief flash animation after saving content via the context menu This gives you an at-a-glance indicator of which sites have ClipNote data without opening the sidebar. THEMES ClipNote supports both dark and light themes. Toggle between them with a single click in the header. Your theme preference is saved and persists across browser sessions. The dark theme features a carefully crafted color palette optimized for low-light environments, while the light theme provides a clean, bright workspace for daytime use. CUSTOMIZABLE INTERFACE Tailor ClipNote to your workflow through the Settings panel: - Show or hide individual tabs: Clipboard, Quick Data, Tasks, and Global notebooks can each be toggled independently - Show or hide the format toolbar if you prefer a minimal writing experience - All preferences persist across sessions The sidebar automatically adapts when you hide tabs — if your currently active tab becomes hidden, ClipNote switches to the Notes tab automatically. PRIVACY AND SECURITY ClipNote is designed with privacy as a core principle: - All data is stored locally in Chrome's extension storage — nothing is sent to external servers unless you explicitly enable cloud sync - Encrypted notebooks use client-side encryption — your password never leaves your browser - No analytics, no tracking, no telemetry - No account required to use any feature - DOMPurify sanitization on all HTML content to prevent XSS attacks - Cloud sync only activates when you explicitly connect a provider - The extension works fully offline (cloud sync is optional) TECHNICAL DETAILS - Built on Chrome Extension Manifest V3 - Side panel API for native Chrome integration - Web Crypto API (SubtleCrypto) for encryption - No external dependencies at runtime except the bundled DOMPurify library for HTML sanitization - No build tools, bundlers, or package managers — clean, auditable source code - Storage quota monitoring with warnings at 85% capacity and hard limits at 98% - Per-notebook size cap of 100 KB to prevent storage abuse - 50-item clipboard limit per domain with automatic oldest-item rotation PERMISSIONS EXPLAINED ClipNote requests the following permissions, each for a specific reason: - storage: Save your notes, clipboard history, tasks, and settings locally - activeTab / tabs: Detect which website you're viewing to show the right notes - sidePanel: Display ClipNote in Chrome's native side panel - clipboardWrite: Allow the "Copy" buttons to write to your system clipboard - identity: Enable Google Drive sync through your Chrome account - contextMenus: Add the "Save to ClipNote" option to your right-click menu - host_permissions (all URLs): Capture clipboard events on any webpage you visit Get started by clicking the ClipNote icon in your toolbar.
