Focus History Tracker

Description

Tracks active browsing activity, website domains, and focus duration to build a personal productivity timeline. Focus History Tracker: The Privacy-First Way to Understand Your Browsing Habits What Is Focus History Tracker? Focus History Tracker is a privacy-first Chrome extension built to help you understand where your time actually goes when you're online. It quietly tracks your active browsing sessions, measures focus duration, groups activity by website domain, and turns raw browsing behavior into clear, actionable insights — all without ever leaving your device. Unlike blockers or "productivity enforcers" that lock you out of websites or force you into rigid schedules, Focus History Tracker takes a different approach: awareness first. It shows you exactly how your day unfolds — which sites you spend deep, focused time on, which ones fragment your attention, and how your habits shift from day to day — so you can make your own informed decisions about your digital life. There's no account to create, no cloud storage, no external servers, no analytics pipelines, and no tracking of you as a person. Every piece of data the extension collects is stored locally in your browser using chrome.storage.local. Nothing is transmitted anywhere. Your browsing patterns belong to you and only you. Most of us spend hours a day inside a browser, yet very few of us could accurately say how that time was actually split. That blind spot has real consequences. Students lose study time to distraction without realizing how much of it slips away between tabs. Remote workers struggle to measure their own productivity without a manager looking over their shoulder. Developers bounce between documentation, Stack Overflow, GitHub, and social tabs, often losing focus without noticing. Professionals want more control over their digital habits but lack the data to build that control. Everyday users simply want to understand their own screen time patterns instead of guessing. Focus History Tracker exists to close that gap — turning vague impressions about your day, like feeling that you were on your phone too much, into concrete, private, local data you can actually act on. Why Users Need Focus History Tracker Modern browsing comes with a familiar set of problems. Too much time gets spent on distracting websites, often without realizing it until the day is already gone. There's usually no visibility into daily habits, since most people can only guess how their browsing time is distributed. It's difficult to measure deep work, because long, focused sessions and short distracted bursts can look identical without a tool that tells them apart. Constant tab switching fragments attention and quietly erodes concentration. There's often no clear line between productive and unproductive browsing, since time spent researching and time spent scrolling can feel the same in the moment. And it's hard to build better digital routines when habits are difficult to see clearly in the first place. Focus History Tracker addresses each of these by observing real browsing behavior, not self-reported guesses, and reflecting it back to you through a clean, local dashboard. Once you can see the pattern, you can change it. Problems Focus History Tracker Solves For students, studying online means constant exposure to distraction, with a lecture tab sitting one click away from a social feed. Focus History Tracker helps students track how long study sessions actually last, not just how long they were planned. It helps them understand how much time is genuinely spent on online learning platforms versus everything else, identify recurring distractions that interrupt coursework and research, and build stronger concentration habits during classes, reading, and research by seeing patterns over days and weeks. For remote workers, without an office environment to create natural structure, remote work can blur into a mix of tasks, tabs, and interruptions. Focus History Tracker helps remote professionals monitor how browsing time breaks down across work tools, communication platforms, and browsing in general. It helps them understand personal focus patterns, such as which hours of the day tend to be most productive, improve time management by seeing where the day actually goes rather than where it was supposed to go, and review productivity trends over time to spot what's working and what isn't. For developers and creators, deep technical or creative work depends on sustained focus, and every unnecessary tab switch has a cost. Focus History Tracker helps developers and creators track coding session length and consistency over time, measure how much time research, documentation lookups, and troubleshooting actually take, and reduce unnecessary switching between unrelated tabs that quietly breaks concentration. For businesses and professionals, even outside formal work contexts, professionals benefit from better self-awareness. Focus History Tracker supports personal productivity improvement based on real usage data rather than assumptions, greater awareness of day-to-day digital workflow, and a clearer understanding of long-term work habits, useful for setting realistic goals. Why Choose Focus History Tracker There are plenty of productivity trackers on the market. Focus History Tracker is built differently, starting from privacy as an architectural principle rather than a marketing claim. It follows a privacy-first architecture, with data collection limited to what's needed for local insights and nothing more. There are no user accounts, so there's nothing to sign up for and no identity tied to your data. There's no cloud tracking, since your browsing information never touches a server. There are no advertisements, meaning the extension isn't a vehicle for ad delivery or ad-tech integration. There are no analytics scripts, so it doesn't phone home to measure its own usage by watching yours. There's no selling of user data, since there's no data to sell in the first place, as it never leaves your device. It offers lightweight browser performance, designed to run quietly in the background without slowing you down. The interface is simple, presenting insights clearly without unnecessary complexity or clutter. And all processing happens locally on your device, from focus sessions to productivity scores. Privacy here isn't just a promise in a policy document; it's a direct result of how the extension is engineered. Because there's no external server to send data to, there's no scenario in which your browsing history could be intercepted in transit, stored on a company's servers, or exposed in a breach. Complete Feature Overview Active tab tracking means Focus History Tracker only tracks the tab you're actively using, not every tab you happen to have open. Background tabs sitting idle aren't counted toward your focus time. This distinction matters, since many people keep a dozen tabs open, and counting all of them would produce misleading, inflated numbers. By tracking only genuine active engagement, the extension gives you a far more accurate picture of how your attention is actually spent. Focus duration tracking measures how long you actively engage with a website, grouping that time into distinct focus sessions. Instead of a single blended number for time online, you get a session-by-session breakdown that reveals your natural concentration patterns, including how long your focus sessions typically last, when they start to fragment, and where you tend to lose momentum. The browsing timeline reconstructs your day as a chronological record of browsing activity, making it easy to review exactly how your time unfolded, session by session and site by site. This is particularly useful at the end of the day or week, when you want to reflect on your habits without having to reconstruct them from memory. Website domain tracking automatically groups activity by website domain, so you can see at a glance where your time is really going, whether that's a handful of frequently visited sites or a long tail of one-off visits. This makes it easy to spot the sites that dominate your day, for better or worse. Website categories organize sites into intuitive groups such as productivity, education, social media, entertainment, development, and research. Categorization turns a list of domain names into a meaningful story about how your time is actually being used, for example revealing that a seemingly productive day was actually split closer to fifty-fifty between work and entertainment. The analytics dashboard brings everything together in one place, including daily statistics summarizing your browsing activity, website usage reports broken down by domain and category, focus duration insights showing session length and consistency, and productivity trends that reveal how your habits shift over time. The productivity score is generated based on your actual browsing behavior, factoring in focus duration, session consistency, and the balance between productive and distracting categories. The score is calculated entirely on your device from local data, giving you a quick, at-a-glance signal without requiring you to interpret raw numbers yourself. Export reports means your productivity data isn't locked away. You can export your reports to review externally or keep as a personal record, which is especially useful for anyone who wants to track long-term trends, build a personal productivity journal, or simply keep an archive outside the extension itself. Privacy controls keep you in control of what's tracked and how, letting you manage tracking settings including what activity is monitored, privacy preferences suited to your comfort level, and data management including clearing or resetting stored information. How Focus History Tracker Works, A Technical Explanation Focus History Tracker is built entirely on standard, well-documented Chrome extension APIs, nothing exotic and nothing that requires broad or unusual permissions. The chrome.tabs API is used to detect which tab is currently active, forming the basis of accurate focus tracking. The chrome.storage.local API is used to store all data directly on your device, with nothing synced externally. The chrome.windows.onFocusChanged API is used to detect when you switch between browser windows, so focus time is measured correctly even across multiple windows. The chrome.idle API is used to detect when you've stepped away from your computer, so idle time isn't miscounted as focused browsing. The chrome.alarms API is used to schedule periodic background tasks, like updating session data, without needing to keep a persistent process constantly running. The workflow is straightforward. You install the extension. Focus History Tracker begins monitoring active browser activity. Active tab changes are detected in real time. Focus sessions are created based on sustained engagement with a given tab. Website domains are automatically categorized. All resulting data is stored locally using chrome.storage.local. The dashboard reads that local data and presents it as clear, readable insights. Every one of these steps happens inside your browser. There is no round trip to an external server, no background sync, and no step in the process where your data leaves your device. Privacy Architecture Focus History Tracker follows a strict, privacy-first model from the ground up. No browsing data ever leaves your device. No external database exists to store or aggregate user information. There is no cloud synchronization of any kind. No user profile is created, on this device or anywhere else. No advertisements are served through the extension. No third-party tracking scripts are embedded in the codebase. All information, including sessions, domains, categories, scores, and settings, is stored locally using chrome.storage.local, Chrome's built-in on-device storage system. If you uninstall the extension or clear its data, that information is gone, since there's no remote copy sitting on a server somewhere. Security and privacy go hand in hand here. The extension uses minimal permissions, only requesting what it needs to function and nothing broader. There's no unnecessary access, since it doesn't read page content, form data, passwords, or anything unrelated to tab-level activity tracking. There's no external communication, and without any network calls to third-party servers, there's no channel through which your data could be intercepted. All processing is local, with every calculation, from session duration to productivity scoring, happening on your machine. And the overall design reduces the attack surface, since fewer permissions and no external connections mean fewer potential points of failure. Because the extension simply has nothing to send and nowhere to send it, you can install it with confidence that your browsing activity stays exactly where it belongs, with you. Productivity tools shouldn't come at the cost of the very performance they're meant to help you protect. Focus History Tracker is lightweight, with a minimal footprint on system resources. It maintains low CPU usage even during continuous tracking and low memory usage so it doesn't compete with the tabs you're actually using. Its background processes are optimized, using event-driven APIs like chrome.alarms rather than constant polling, making it suitable for all-day, everyday use without noticeable slowdown. Real-World Use Cases A university student uses Focus History Tracker throughout a semester of online classes. Reviewing the weekly dashboard, they discover that most of their study time genuinely goes toward educational platforms, but that nearly all of their distraction happens in short bursts between classes rather than during them. That insight helps them tighten up transition time between sessions. A developer reviews their weekly analytics and notices a pattern: coding sessions are frequently interrupted by quick detours to unrelated sites. Seeing the actual frequency of these switches, rather than just a vague feeling of getting distracted sometimes, makes it much easier to address. A remote employee analyzes their focus sessions over a month and notices their most productive hours consistently fall in the late morning. They restructure their schedule to protect that window for deep work. A researcher uses the browsing timeline to see exactly how much time is spent gathering information online versus other activity, helping them budget research time more realistically for future projects. A writer compares research time against distraction time and realizes that what felt like constant research was actually a mix of genuine research and unrelated browsing, information that reshapes how they plan future writing sessions. Supported Browsers Focus History Tracker is built on Manifest V3 and works across the Chromium ecosystem, including Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Brave, Opera, and other Chromium-based browsers that support Manifest V3 extensions. Because it relies on standard Chromium APIs rather than Chrome-specific features, it behaves consistently across these browsers. Who Should Use Focus History Tracker Focus History Tracker is well suited to students managing coursework and study time, developers protecting deep work and coding focus, remote workers building better daily structure, freelancers tracking their own time without external tools, researchers measuring information-gathering time, writers and other creators balancing research and output, entrepreneurs juggling many browser-based tasks, professionals of any kind who want a clearer picture of their digital habits, and really anyone who simply wants more self-awareness about their time online. Benefits Focus History Tracker helps you understand your real browsing habits rather than your assumptions about them. It helps improve focus by showing what helps and what hurts your concentration, and it helps reduce distractions by identifying their actual sources.
