Description
Sticky reading progress bar and smooth back-to-top button. Back to Top & Progress is a privacy-focused Chrome extension that makes long webpages easier to navigate by combining two helpful reading tools: a sticky reading progress bar at the top of the page and a smooth floating back-to-top button. Many webpages are much longer than they appear at first. Articles, guides, research pages, product documentation, legal pages, help centers, and blog posts can require a lot of scrolling. Without a clear sense of progress, it can be hard to know how much content remains. Back to Top & Progress solves this by displaying a slim sticky progress bar along the top edge of the page. As you scroll, the bar fills to show how far you have moved through the content, giving you an immediate visual sense of reading depth. The progress bar is designed to be both useful and intuitive. Its color transitions from green to red as reading depth increases. At the beginning of a page, the bar starts in green, suggesting that you are early in the content. As you continue scrolling, the color gradually shifts through warmer tones until it reaches red near the end of the page. This gives you two signals at once: the length of the filled bar shows your position, while the changing color reinforces how far through the page you are. The extension also includes a smooth back-to-top floating button. Once you scroll past a configurable threshold, the button fades into view, giving you a quick way to return to the top of the page. This is especially helpful on very long webpages where manually scrolling back up can be annoying or time-consuming. With one click, you can glide smoothly back to the top instead of dragging the scrollbar or repeatedly using keyboard shortcuts. Back to Top & Progress works entirely inside Chrome and does not use any external API. No data is ever transmitted to third-party servers. The extension applies its progress bar, scrolling behavior, and floating button locally in your browser using browser-based functionality. It does not upload webpage content, browsing history, website URLs, scroll activity, personal information, or usage data. Everything happens on your own device, giving you a private and secure way to improve webpage navigation. Privacy is a core part of the extension’s design. A scrolling and reading utility should not need to know what you read or send your activity anywhere. Back to Top & Progress is built so that all behavior remains local. It does not require an account, does not connect to analytics services for page tracking, does not rely on cloud processing, and does not transmit your reading progress to third parties. Whether you are reading public articles, private documentation, internal company pages, school materials, personal accounts, or sensitive web content, the extension keeps your activity inside Chrome. The configurable scroll threshold makes the extension more flexible. Some users may want the back-to-top button to appear soon after they begin scrolling, while others may prefer it to stay hidden until they are deeper into the page. By allowing the fade-in point to be adjusted, the extension can fit different browsing styles and page types. This helps keep the interface useful without becoming distracting. On very long pages, the back-to-top button can pulsate gently as a subtle visual cue. This is designed to remind users that quick navigation is available without overwhelming the page. The animation is intentionally gentle, making it noticeable enough to be helpful but not so strong that it interrupts reading. For long documentation pages, research articles, endless forum threads, or lengthy tutorials, this small cue can make navigation feel easier and more comfortable. Students can use Back to Top & Progress while reading online course materials, study guides, research articles, or long reference pages. The progress bar helps them understand how far they are through a reading assignment, while the back-to-top button makes it easy to return to headings, navigation menus, or introduction sections. Researchers can use it to move through long sources more efficiently and maintain a better sense of page structure. Professionals can benefit when reviewing reports, policies, documentation, internal wikis, project notes, and knowledge-base pages. Long work documents often require frequent movement between sections. The progress bar provides orientation, and the back-to-top button reduces friction when returning to page menus or summary sections. Developers can use it while reading technical documentation, API references, GitHub pages, tutorials, and troubleshooting guides. Writers and editors can also find the extension useful. When reviewing long drafts, published articles, or content previews, the progress bar helps show how much of the page has been reviewed. The smooth return-to-top button makes it easier to revisit titles, introductions, table-of-contents sections, or top-level navigation. For bloggers and content creators, it can make content review more pleasant and efficient. Back to Top & Progress is intentionally lightweight and focused. It does not try to replace reader modes, bookmarking systems, note-taking tools, or productivity platforms. Its purpose is simple: show reading progress and make page navigation easier. Because it does not use external APIs or remote servers, it can work quickly without upload delays, login screens, or third-party processing. The extension is useful across many types of websites, including blogs, news articles, documentation pages, forums, tutorials, educational pages, help centers, long product pages, and online reports. It is especially valuable on pages that lack their own progress indicator or quick return-to-top control. Back to Top & Progress is ideal for anyone who wants a smoother, clearer, and more private long-page reading experience. No external API is used. No data is ever transmitted to third-party servers. No page content, browsing activity, scroll position, website URLs, or personal information is uploaded or shared. With its sticky progress bar, green-to-red reading depth color transition, smooth floating back-to-top button, configurable fade-in threshold, and gentle pulse cue for very long pages, Back to Top & Progress is a practical Chrome extension for better reading and navigation. It helps you stay oriented, move through long pages with less effort, and keep your browsing experience private and secure on your own device.
