Reads full articles aloud with sentence-by-sentence highlighting, and saves notes as you read. Rilo reads web pages and PDFs aloud, highlighting each sentence as it speaks — so you can follow along, or look away entirely. Useful for long articles you don't have time to sit and read, for resting your eyes, for proofreading your own writing by ear, or simply for getting through a reading list while doing something else. WHAT IT DOES • Articles — finds the actual article on a page and skips the navigation, adverts and comments. • PDFs — Chrome's built-in PDF viewer cannot be read aloud by any extension, so Rilo renders PDFs itself and reads them in order, with the original layout intact. Files are never uploaded; the rendering happens in your browser. • Read-along highlighting — the sentence being spoken is highlighted in place, without altering the page or breaking how it works. • Picks up where you stopped — your position is remembered per page, even after a reload. • Notes while you read — select any text and save it. Notes stay in your browser and sync between your Chrome installations like bookmarks. • Four voices, adjustable speed — US and UK, male and female, from 0.5× to 2×. WHY IT ASKS YOU TO SIGN IN Speech is generated on a server, and generating it costs money per character. Signing in with Google lets Rilo tell one user's usage from another's and apply a fair daily limit — without it, anyone who found the address of that server could exhaust its capacity until it stopped working for everybody. Rilo requests the narrowest permission available (openid). It receives an anonymous account identifier and never your email address, name, profile picture, contacts, or anything else from your Google Account, and it has no access to any other Google service. You can revoke access at any time at myaccount.google.com/permissions. PRIVACY • Sentences you ask Rilo to read are sent to Rilo's own speech server to be turned into audio, and are not kept afterwards. • PDF files are never uploaded — only the sentence text is. • Your notes and reading position never leave your browser. • The address of the page you are reading is never transmitted. • No analytics, no advertising, no trackers, no crash reporting. • Nothing is sold, and nothing is used to train AI models. Nothing runs on a page until you click the Rilo icon, and then only in that tab. It reads a page's content when you press play, and access ends when you navigate away. Opening a PDF hosted on a website asks separately for permission to read that one site, so that Rilo can fetch the file. Decline and the PDF simply does not open.
