Control HTML5 video/audio playback speed with customizable keyboard shortcuts, per-site rules, and a draggable on-page controller. Take full control of playback speed on any video or audio — YouTube, Netflix, Udemy, Coursera, podcasts, lecture recordings, or any site using standard HTML5 <video>/<audio> — with a lightweight, always-ready speed controller and fully customizable keyboard shortcuts. WHY INSTALL IT Watching everything at 1x wastes time. Video Speed Controller lets you speed through slow lectures, skim interviews, or slow down dense tutorials — instantly, from the keyboard, without ever touching a mouse. It's built for students, researchers, developers watching conference talks, and anyone who spends hours a day watching video online. HOW IT WORKS A small speed widget appears on the video itself, anchored to its top-left corner. It shows only the current speed (e.g. "2.20") so it stays out of your way — hover over it and it expands to reveal quick controls: rewind 10s, decrease speed, increase speed, and advance 10s. Click the number directly to type an exact speed. Drag the widget anywhere you like on the video. The widget fades in the moment you move your mouse over the video (or use a shortcut) and fades back out automatically after a few seconds of inactivity, so it never blocks the picture during normal viewing. KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS — FULLY CUSTOMIZABLE Every shortcut can be rebound to any key, with optional Shift/Ctrl/Alt modifiers to avoid clashing with a site's own hotkeys: - Show/hide the controller - Increase / decrease speed (by a custom step) - Rewind / advance by a custom number of seconds - Reset to a default speed - Jump to a "preferred" speed with one key - Set a marker and jump back to it later - Play/pause Add as many custom shortcuts as you want from the Settings tab. REMEMBERS YOUR SPEED Change the speed once and it carries over to the next video automatically — even across a full page reload if "Remember playback speed" is enabled. Great for binge-watching a course at 1.75x without resetting speed on every new video. PER-SITE RULES Some sites don't need this extension, or need a different default: - Disable the extension entirely on specific domains (supports regex patterns for matching multiple sites at once) - Force a default speed on a specific site (e.g. always start podcasts at 1.5x) WORKS WITH AUDIO TOO Toggle audio support on to get the same controller and shortcuts on <audio> elements — handy for podcast players and audiobook sites, not just video. ADVANCED CUSTOMIZATION - Adjust the controller's opacity and button size - Inject your own custom CSS to reposition the widget on sites where it overlaps native player controls - Set the console log verbosity for troubleshooting - Export/import your full settings as JSON, or reset everything to defaults in one click PRIVACY Video Speed Controller does not collect, transmit, or sell any of your data. All settings are stored locally in your browser. The extension only runs on pages you visit to detect and control video/audio playback — nothing is sent anywhere. Local files (opened via File > Open) and Incognito windows require one-time manual permission via chrome://extensions, per Chrome's standard extension security model.
